Joining Jurin on Saturday were two former Democrat leaders, Chuan Leekpai and Banyat Bantadtan, along with incumbent deputy leader Nipon Bunyamanee.
Jurin, who holds the caretaker commerce minister’s post, said his party has snapped up all MP seats in Surat Thani 11 times thanks to local support. This time, he said, the Democrat Party includes two Surat Thani locals – Banyat and Sinit Lertkrai, the incumbent deputy commerce minister.
“Based on my experience in Thai politics, I don’t believe there will be any landslide victories this time,” Jurin said.
He added that voters should choose political parties that are ready, have a strong political stance and have even stronger policies.
He said that if the Democrat Party wins, it will strengthen Thailand’s democratic government and maintain transparency to ensure the budget is well spent. He also promised that his party will work hard to wipe out the scourge of corruption.
Jurin said the party will work to “generate revenue, develop people and rebuild the country” to help improve people’s quality of life.
The event wrapped up with the showing of a video clip made by the party’s chief strategist, Watanya “Madame Dear” Bunnag, in which she called on people to vote for the party.
Democrat Party is fielding seven candidates for Surat Thani, namely Panu Sribussayakarn (Constituency 1), Wiwat Nilwatcharamanee (Constituency 2), Piyarat Jiraratthikul (Constituency 3), Somchart Praditporn (Constituency 4), Sinit (Constituency 5), Thirapat Pringsulaka (Constituency 6), and Tuangthong Praditporn (Constituency 7).
Jurin dropped plans to continue campaigning in Ubon Ratchathani on Sunday after learning that his father, Weera Laksanawisit, had succumbed to old age. He was 93.
His father’s body was transported from Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok to Jurin’s hometown in Phang Nga’s Thai Muang district on Sunday afternoon for funeral rites.
Pheu Thai Party has declared its ambitions of a landslide victory in the upcoming election in order to set up a single-party government.
