Prayut Chan-o-cha appointed as a privy councillor

Former prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has been appointed to the Privy Council by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, according to the Royal Gazette published Wednesday.

Effective November 30 (Thursday), the former Army commander and coup leader, becomes the latest member of the Privy Council.

Prayut came to power in 2014 after leading the coup that toppled Yingluck Shinawatra’s government.

He was elected prime minister in the following general election, and re-elected in the 2019 election. Gen Prayut left office in August this year.

The Privy Council was first appointed during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V as the personal advisor to the King.

The Council coordinates between the Crown and the government, the Parliament, the Courts of Justice, the private sector and the people on matters within its jurisdiction.
