Loy Krathong is celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month, which this year fell on November 27, when Thais launch decorated floats or “krathong” onto waterbodies to pay respect to Phra Mae Khongkh, the Goddess of Water.
In Sukhothai, the festival has been celebrated in and around Sukhothai Historical Park in Muang district since November 18.
After floating the krathong that was bestowed by His Majesty the King, the PM and his wife witnessed a light and sound show in the company of deputy prime minister Somsak Thepsutin, a Sukhothai native, who welcomed the PM’s group.
Srettha then travelled to a dam construction project at a bridge crossing the Yom River in Si Samrong district, which is part of the province’s efforts to prevent flooding from river overflows. The PM’s group also visited the Sukhothai Public Park in Muang district to hear the latest updates on the overall water situation from provincial officials.
To wrap up his Sukhothai trip, Srettha granted an audience to footballers of Sukhothai FC, who presented him with a football jersey with his name and the number 30, marking his tenure as the country’s 30th prime minister.
