When the moon passes between the sun and Earth, entirely covering the face of the sun along a small path of the planet's surface, this is called a "path of totality”.
Most people in that part of the United States were able to see a partial eclipse, in which the moon obscures most of the sun's face. But those living in places along the path of totality were able to view the sun's outer atmosphere, which typically is not visible because of solar brightness.
According to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the total solar eclipse was visible to residents in the US, Mexico and Canada until 2.55pm on Tuesday, Thailand time.
