Thailand’s undiscovered gem: Sob Moei’s sea of mist

SUNDAY, MARCH 05, 2023

The sea of mist at the Glocelo Village in Mae Hong Son’s Sob Moei district on the Thai-Myanmar border is considered one of Thailand’s few undiscovered treasures.

Though the sea of mist can be admired from a viewpoint some two kilometres away, the experience is not as spectacular. The best season to enjoy the misty mornings and spectacular sunsets is in the cool season, between November and January.

To get to Glocelo Village, people can travel down Highway No 105 before taking rural road 3004 to get to Ban Lekho village. They will then have to tackle a winding, steep dirt road to Glocelo.

Visitors are advised to use four-wheel-drive vehicles or motocross motorcycles to navigate the road, which becomes almost impassable during the rainy season.

If visitors want to stay overnight, they must come prepared as there is only a camping site at the Glocelo Village.

Village headman Pholuangchanchai Bamrungrattanatrai said very few people visit because the village is very difficult to get to.

“Besides, not many people know about it,” he said. He said the dirt path is very difficult even for locals, especially when there is a medical emergency.

“It takes an hour just to get to the main road,” he said, adding that people would have a better quality of life if the road was improved.

He said the area boasts of many other attractions as well, including the fresh coffee at Ban Lekho village, panoramic views from Doi Pha Tang Ban Lekho mountain and the Glocelo waterfall.

Separately, the road to the Glocelo village is apparently being improved as part of the controversial Nam Yuam Dam construction.
