Parnpree meets Thai workers in Israel as more hostages released

Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara met with a group of 28 Thai expatriates in Tel Aviv on Wednesday and expressed support for their decision to stay in Israel.

Parnpree is visiting the Mideast state to oversee the mission to repatriate Thai workers released by Hamas militants during the ceasefire with Israel.

Four more Thai nationals held hostage in the Gaza Strip were released on Wednesday, according to the Thai Foreign Ministry. It estimates that nine Thais are still being held by Hamas in Gaza.

Parnpree met with the Thai expats on his visit to the Thai embassy, which is coordinating the repatriation mission.

Parnpree, who doubles as deputy prime minister, informed them that he had talked with Israeli President Isaac Herzog about securing the release of more Thai hostages.

He added that the government would pay compensation for all Thais held captive, as well as those killed or injured in the fighting.

He also expressed hope that Thais would not return to work in areas close to the conflict zones.

The foreign minister tied good-luck threads around the wrists of the 28 Thai expats to boost their morale.

He also visited the embassy’s bunker, designed to ensure the security of staff.

Hamas has freed 23 Thai hostages since a truce with Israel came into effect on November 24. The militant group has also released 70 Israelis, two Russians and a Filipino. In return, Israel has released 210 Palestinians.
