Our picks from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

For those wondering about future tech trends, the annual “Consumer Electronics Show (CES)” in Las Vegas can always be relied upon to provide the answer.

At this year’s global event, CES 2017, the Internet of Things played a fundamental role in pretty much all the products and solutions on display, ranging from household products to smart city management.
After experiencing many of the new offerings as well as participating in a series of product demonstrations during the event from January 5 to 8, The Nation selected some of the products launched during the huge consumer electronics and consumer technology trade show to give a taste of what the future holds as far as the industry is concerned.
Here is what we have come up with:

Starting with the household-product category, major electronics manufacturers sought to convince consumers that the new era of TV screens should create a better viewing experience not only by using 4K ultra-high-definition screens, but by moving forward to 8K UHD offerings.
South Korea’s Samsung Electronics decided to showcase its future technology with 8K TVs, as well as its next-innovation flagship QLED TV line-up, which is better than the maker’s current-model OLED sets.
Unfortunately, 8K TVs were just a showcase at the event, as they require more time to be developed, while the content-production side must also be ready for this cutting-edge technology.
However, the company’s QLED TVs will be available soon.

Beijing-based Xiaomi introduced and claimed that its new smart TV, the Mi TV 4, had the world’s thinnest TV screen – at just 4.9 millimetres.
With the company targeting young-generation customers such as first-jobbers and family-builders, the prices of its new products and smart solutions should be affordable, but the bad news is that Xiaomi currently has no authorised dealers in Thailand.

Apart from the hi-tech TV screens for future entertainment experience in the living room, smart beds were another exciting area for those attending the show, with the Sleep Number 36O named the Best of Innovation honoree in the “CES Innovation Awards“ in the Home Appliances category.
In addition to the key features of this smart bed, US maker Sleep Number said it came equipped with self-adjusting comfort throughout the night, automatic snore detection and adjustment, foot warming to help you fall asleep faster, and a smart alarm feature that awakens at the optimal moment.

Home safety and security is another highlighted smart-solution area, with our selection being German giant Bosch’s offering of its smart single solution at the event.
Linked to the solution via cloud computing, a home-owner can control their home safety via a mobile application.
At CES 2017, Bosch demonstrated its indoor/outdoor camera and smoke detector as a well-designed security combination.
