‘Mae Tuck’, ‘Pa Beer’ arrested, face action for misleading consumers

Both appear confident of winning the case, even though hundreds of buyers accuse them of selling below-par gold ornaments

Social media influencers Kornkanok Suwannabut and her husband Kanpol Rueng-aram, aka “Mae Tuck” and “Pa Beer”, were arrested by Crime Suppression Division officers on Monday.

The officers had arrived at their home in Bangkok’s Ramindra neighbourhood armed with arrest warrants from the Criminal Court. They also raided the couple’s shop in Khlong Sam Wa district.

The couple faces charges of deceiving consumers, putting distorted facts into a computer system, advertising falsely and causing misunderstanding on their products’ quality, police said. They were escorted to the Crime Suppression Division in Chatuchak to undergo legal procedures.

Kornkanok refused to tell Nation TV about her testimony, only saying she was not worried about the case, while Kanpol said he would provide clarifications after the police investigation is completed. He also confirmed that the victims would still be able to call for a refund.

Last week, the duo were accused of selling gold ornaments that had less gold content than originally advertised. Hundreds of buyers flocked to their shop in Bangkok last Monday, demanding a refund. They were told that they would only get a full refund if they returned everything, including the free gift, and signed a document agreeing not to take legal action against the couple.

Meanwhile, some 20 complainants met with the Consumer Protection Police Division on September 26 to seek legal action, though some 135 other customers were denied the chance to file complaints.
