Equal Marriage Law will make Thailand the first ASEAN country to legalise marriage for same-sex couples

Keywords related to equal marriage have been trending among Thais who use the Google search engine since the draft law was proposed on August 9 last year, Nation Group media arm Krungthep Turakij reported on Sunday.

Searches on equal marriage continued trending this year, with three keyword variations: recent equal marriage, marriage registration 2024, and auspicious day for marriage registration 2024.

Search volume rose significantly when the Equal Marriage Law received House of Representatives consideration on March 27, when it received Senate consideration on June 18, and when it was announced on the Royal Gazette website on September 24.

The five provinces with the highest search volume for equal marriage on Sunday were Phayao, Kanchanaburi, Nonthaburi, Chanthaburi and Bangkok.

The historic push for Thailand's Equal Marriage Law will make it the first ASEAN country to legalise marriage for same-sex couples, granting them the same rights as opposite-sex spouses.

The law will come into effect on January 22 next year, 120 days after the announcement in the Royal Gazette.
