The Bangkok culinary landmark boasts a remarkable selection of locally made products crafted from premium natural ingredients, along with a wide array of certified organic delicacies.
Its two branches, in Thonglor and Asok, offer gourmet charcuterie, meats, cheeses, spirits, craft beers and wine – all made in Thailand by producers devoted to their craft.
Discerning foodies are now flocking back through VIVIN’s doors, just two months after they opened.
“Our product choices are inspired by our own passion for local produce since appearing at the Farmers’ Market 10 years ago, and also our positive encounters with locally based artisans who prioritise genuine quality. We also consider market demand and aim to cater to niche markets,” said Nicolas Vivin, founder and managing director.
Tagged onto the gourmet grocers is an all-day restaurant serving Le petit déjeuner of scrumptious French pastries like croissants and pain au chocolat.
Prefer savoury to sweet in the morning?
Try the fluffy omelette of three local cheeses – Huay Bong from Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai’s Le Doi Pao and Molene.
But to really eat like a French person, you need baguette. In France, these torpedo-shaped loaves are the main weapon against hunger throughout the day, from breakfast tartine (toast concoctions) to cheese pairings to cleaning the plate after a saucy supper. VIVIN Grocery does not disappoint, keeping it simple and traditional with their unmissable 40-centimetre Jambon-Fromage Sandwich.
The menu of French delicacies doesn’t end there.
The Thai Cheese Aligot – French cheesy mashed potatoes blended with butter, cream and garlic – offers a delicious and sophisticated take on the humble spud.
VIVIN towards sustainability
From the original wholesale and supermarket kiosk business in 2013, VIVIN has grown into a foody hangout for friends and family. The pet-friendly stores are equipped with a bar and meat station, while shelves are packed with local and organic produce from all over Thailand to serve Western tastes. Pet treats are even available!
As the world moves towards sustainability, VIVIN is at the forefront with its commitment to local sourcing and community bonding. The store insists that every product it offers must be derived from all-natural ingredients or bear organic certification, with an emphasis on sourcing locally or regionally to support sustainability and reduce waste. Imports are also kept to a minimum, ensuring a strong focus on local culinary treasures.
“Our values revolve around honesty, offering the best quality, and supporting artisanal, natural, and locally sourced products. We champion small producers against industrial, standardised food products.”, said Nicolas Vivin.
Wondering if Thai cheese meets international standards?
Nicolas is happy to answer.
“There's often a misconception that Thai cheese lacks quality and taste. In reality, it can be superior to many imported cheeses, especially the industrial varieties. While it's still fairly early days for the local cheese industry in Thailand, the quality has moved very fast and the feedback has been wonderful. It's heartening to see people support artisanal local products that have been crafted with time, care, and love.”
In addition, Thai cheese and Thai wine have distinctive flavours that perfectly complement each other.“Thai cheese has its unique characteristics due to the distinct terroir, climate, soil, and animal diet in Thailand,” Nicolas explains.
“It's essential to understand that Thai cheese, while it may share some methodologies and techniques with French cheese, is inherently different. Each cheese is influenced by its geographical location and the artisan's personal touch, making it a unique product.”, said the founder.
VIVIN now stocks over 400 products, boosting its reputation as a one-stop destination for local, artisanal, and natural goods.
