What makes a vegan a vegan

In your Sunday edition there was an interesting article noting that a plant-based diet isn’t necessarily vegan and a vegan diet isn’t necessarily healthy.

As I’ve noted before, you could eat 20 bags of potato chips a day and technically be a vegan. But you won’t be healthy.
The people in “The China Study” were on a plant-based diet, but they weren’t generally vegans. The reason they had such low rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc is because they mostly ate whole foods, plant foods and only a small amount of animal products. Even still, the study’s author, Dr T Colin Campbell, noted that the fewer animal products those people ate, the healthier they were, which is why he advocates a vegan diet.
He sums up the ideal diet by saying, “Eat a whole-food, plant-based diet, while minimising the consumption of refined food, added salt and added fat.” That says it all!
