Music to the ears

FANS OF hard rock and similar genres can now enjoy heart-thumping power and deep-bass punch with the new over-ear phones from Audio-Technica.

The ATH-WS770iS is one of seven new models in Audio-Technica’s popular Solid Bass range that focuses on full and textured bass levels, which make the phones ideal for hard rock, hip-hop, metal, electronica and other bass-driven music.

The WS770iS features 53mm drivers for reproducing powerful bass, along with smooth, accurate mid-range and treble. It has a dual-aluminium rigid enclosure design with an aluminium stabiliser and boasts anti-vibration to produce precise mid-high frequency. The phones also have a top-mounted PCB design to equalise the air pressure behind the diaphragm for balanced sound with low distortion.

The swivel design makes the phones easy to carry around and the soft headband and equally soft ear pads make them comfortable for long hours of listening. 

The package comes with an in-line remote that allows you to control volume, play, pause, fast forward and rewind music playback on compatible Apple and Android devices. The remote also allows users to answer calls over the headphones.

The in-line remote is integrated to a 1.2-metre cable that uses Audio-Technica’s signature 3.5mm gold-plated stereo L-shaped mini-plug.

I tested the phones with an Android smartphone and had no problems playing and pausing the music with the remote. When I double-clicked it, it skipped to the next track. I tested it with iPad Pro with the same positive results. I also found I could return to the previous track by pressing the button on the remote three times.

The headphones have good frequency response of 8 to 29,000 Hz and impedance of 38 ohms. Output sensitivity is high at 100 dB.

Listening to music from iPad Pro and Sony NW-A20 Walkman digital music player, the WS770iS reproduced very powerful bass and good musical details. For example, I enjoyed listening to AC/DC’s “Rock or Bust” album. The bass drum and guitar sounded very powerful and in nice contrast with the lead guitar and high-pitch vocals.

The ATH-WS770iS is available in black, red and gunmetal. The phones are distributed by RTB Technology for Bt4,690.
