Thai designer Anchalee Vikasidnakhakun gets inspired by the intricate tattoos worn by the Japanese Yazuka

Thai brand Anchavika draws on the tattoos proudly boasted by Japan’s famed gangsters for its latest autumnwinter collection, “Yakuza”.
“Most of my design inspiration comes from playing with the things that I love and art is one of them,” says Anchalee Vikasidnakhakun, the designer and founder of the brand, at the recent runway show held at CentralWorld.
“I’ve long been fascinated by the tattoos adorning the bodies of these powerful and confident characters, which exude strength but are wholeheartedly artistic at the same time. To me, those elements reflect the Anchavika woman, who is artistic, brave, confident and creative and always craving something different.”
These attributes are seamlessly harmonised with the art and the elaborate quitting technique used in the cutting is designed to elongate the body, making the woman look taller and slimmer.
The high quality fabrics include fine quilted denim and delicate lace with gold chains used for trimming. Japanese motif embroideries sporting a charming cartoon twist appear throughout the collection and stones, beads as well as gold and silver threads are carefully crafted to add refined detailing.
In line with the Yazuka theme, the buttons come in skill form and are carefully laid into a cruciform shape. There’s also a gothic skull on the olive tiara zip opener while the Anchavika lion head is framed by several tiny skulls, beads and pearls.
And Anchalee continues to work hard to ensure that her clothes have a slimming effect.
“My dressmaker and I spend hours fixing the designs. There are lots of techniques that can be used to give a slimmer look to the torso and while some women may think that the quilted look will make them appear fat, the opposite is true.”
