Songs we knew so well

Rawiwan "Aui" Jinda and Charas "Tam" Feungarom team up for the next Judprakai concert

Veteran singers of the '80s, Rawiwan “Aui” Jinda and Charas “Tam” Feungarom, join up for the next concert in Krungthep Turakit’s Judprakai series, performing in “The Story of Us” at the Thailand Cultural Centre’s small hall on August 24.
Often billed as musical siblings, the duo will cover each other’s numbers as well as sing their respective hits. The show will take the audience back to the good old days with both Tam and Aui recalling their three decades of experience on the local music scene, explaining the background to their songs and describing their perspectives as singers.
Aui’s career path started in 1986 when she won the Siam Kolkarn Music Award and was signed by the Creatia label for her first record, “Rung Uan”.
“Many of the songs were written by Prapas “Jik” Cholsaranon, who is still something big brother to several singers today,” she says.
A year ago, Aui shot to fame with the release of “Phroh Rao Khaojai” (“Because We Understand”), with Thai music fans going crazy for her melodic vocals.
Charas took a very different path into showbiz. A former executive of the Bangkok Bank, Charas teamed up with his friend and producer Ponthep “Toon” Suwanbun, to form The Flash in the early ’80s.
The band’s most popular songs include “Phi Suea” (“Butterfly”), “Ru Yoo Kae Jai” (“We Know Your Heart”), and “Phroh Mee Ther” (“Because of You”), on which he duets with Maleewan “Mint” Jemina.
Charas has recorded several albums with different record labels and is best known for his philosophical lyrics. Last year, he released “Nam Prik Tuey Kao” (“The Old Bowl of Chilli Paste”) and was rewarded with a nod from the Kom Chad Luek Awards.
In a recent interview with the Judprakrai team at Bangkok’s Maduzi Hotel, Charas and Rawiwan shared their feelings about the upcoming show.
“I’ve been a fan of Tam’s songs for a long time and I’m delighted to have this opportunity to cover “Rak Eng Cham Eng” and “Phroh Chanan”, Rawiwan confided.
“Both songs summarise the human spirit,” says Charas. One of them describes life’s lowest point after a betrayal in love while the other is about overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of an honourable life.”
Charas and Aui will both be performing less well-known songs at the show. “I wonder how many fans will remember ‘Sin Samphan’ and ‘Fai Nai Suang’, Charas muses.
