Annual Vegetarian Festival from October 2-11 in Bangkok Chinatown

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2024

Bangkok’s Chinatown is gearing up to celebrate the annual Vegetarian Festival from October 2-11. This year's event will coincide with the sixth anniversary of His Majesty the King's Birthday.

Under the theme "72 Blessed Birthdays", the Vegetarian Festival will feature various activities, including a vegetarian cooking demonstration of “Fried Noodles with 10 Heavenly Dragons", followed by a free food distribution. Additionally, a procession of flower cars will be held to honour the goddess Guanyin, and a vibrant lion-dance procession will take place.

Prasit Ongwattana, chairman of the 2024 Vegetarian Festival and of the Cultural Council of Samphanthawong district, announced that the festival will be held at the 6th Anniversary Arch of His Majesty the King on Yaowarat Road.

The event aims to provide the public with an opportunity to worship and seek blessings from sacred objects throughout Chinatown, as well as to enjoy clean, hygienic, and safe vegetarian food.

"A highlight of the festival will be the creation of a massive pan of auspicious noodles, known as ‘Fried Noodles with 10 Heavenly Dragons’, by a renowned master chef from the Grand China Chinatown Hotel," Prasit said.

“This dish will be distributed free of charge to attendees on Thursday, October 3. The festival will also feature lion and dragon processions, as well as other celebratory activities," he added.

The Vegetarian Festival in Chinatown has been a tradition since 2005, inspired by the faith and beliefs of the Thai-Chinese community. By abstaining from meat consumption, participants contribute to charity and promote health and well-being.
