More to Imran’s rise than Test skills

I’ve obviously touched a raw nerve with my reply to Alf Haupt, and bruised a fragile ego, if I may mix metaphors. What is evident is that, as is often the case when exposing this sort of risible, irrational hubris, the truth hurts.

Incredibly, Haupt waffles on about “statistics” to bolster his anaemic argument, thus showing a lack of understanding of how these things can be, and are, sicked up by certain characters.
Let’s take a closer look. Haupt’s unwise reference to statistics was popularised in the United States by Mark Twain (among others), who attributed it to Britain’s then-prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli: “There are three kinds of lies – lies, damned lies and statistics.”
That emphatically categorises Haupt’s chauvinistic, gossamer-thin method of using figures to fit a one-dimensional attempt at gravitas.
What Haupt should concentrate on is the truly ghastly state of nuclear-armed Pakistan’s internal structure instead of giddy, one-trophy triumphalism. It should be evident that, in the face of being an alleged failed state, there are rather more serious issues to address than Imran Khan being a cricketer who was admittedly well above average, but not truly great in my opinion.
These include lifting the Pakistani people out of poverty (they deserve better; addressing the dire security situation), and talking constructively with nuclear-armed India about, for example, resolving the running sore that is Kashmir. This rather puts Haupt’s empty braggadocio into context.
