Alf Haupt’s talent for hyperbole – positive or negative – seems to know no bounds. His gushing hagiographical account of Imran Khan the cricketer takes inappropriate, slavish genuflection to an entirely new level.
In a graduated progression of high cant, he refers to Imran as the “consummate cricketer”; “nay, he was just a genius!” Trumpian exclamation mark noted.
To suggest such consummate perfection, one places Imran in the company of true greats like Don Bradman, Shane Warne, WG Grace, Garfield “Gary” Sobers and Sachin Tendulkar. Dare I say “Geoffrey Boycott”?
That will raise a laugh amongst some jaded appetites, I’ll warrant. Irrespective, Imran was good, undoubtedly, but not that good. The real killer is calling him a “genius”. So, he now finds himself amongst the likes of Einstein, Newton, Darwin and Michelangelo, according to Haupt. Not a hope. You’ve got more chance of teaching tap-dancing to jellyfish. Now, that cricketing issue should put the cat amongst the pigeons
But, rescuing Pakistan from being the basket case some consider it currently to be represents another matter entirely.
