Rising star fails at last hurdle

National Fed Cup player Peangtarn Plipuech stemmed the run of up-and-coming Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-3 6-1 to claim the women’s singles title at the Singha Bangkok Open on Sunday.

World No 224 Peangtarn relied on her full repertoire of shots at the Impact Tennis Academy to subdue her 15-year-old rival, who had posted upset wins over seeded players such as Nudnida Luangnam and Thai international rep Patcharin Cheapcharndej en route to the final.
On the men’s side, outsider Chayanon Kaewsuto upset national Davis Cup player Jirat Navasirisomboon 6-4 3-6 6-1.
