The premier yesterday granted an audience to Thai delegation led by Olympic Committee of Thailand president and deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan at the Government House, a tradition that has been going on for a while.
“We look forward to excellence. We won’t be going to compete if we don’t hope to win in the first place,” Prayut said. “But I don’t mean that every one of you must win. I just want you to compete with determination to win,” he said.
Prayut, however, reminded athletes to show sportsmanship, avoid arguments and be good sporting ambassadors for the Kingdom.
“Please don’t forget to show sportsmanship. Respect the rules and don’t argue with referees and at the same time show respect to the crowd. The whole country is behind you,” Prayut said.
The PM also suggested that athletes must remain focused and practise meditation through proper breathing to enhance their concentration. He also hoped athletes would bring happiness back to Thai fans with exceptional performances at the Games.
A total of 1,128 Thais, 452 male and 367 female athletes and 399 officials, will take part in the regional event, which comprises 38 disciplines that offer 404 gold medals.
