The 5,000-plus tickets for the show sold out in a mere two minutes for the last stop on Taeyeon’s “Persona” tour.
Forbes magazine’s Korean edition last year named this former Girls’ Generation singer among the Top 40 Power Celebrities.
Taeyeon went solo in 2015 with the EP “I”, whose title track sold a million digital copies, and followed up with “Why” last year, which produced two top 10 singles.
This year she issued her debut studio album, “My Voice”, with its singles “Fine” and “Make Me Love You”.
The crowd at the Thunder Dome was emotional from the start as photos of her and her fans around the world appeared on the jumbo screens.
The 28-year-old was quickly onstage demonstrating her stated influence from Whitney Houston on a powerful rendition of “U R”, a song about communicating with fans.
The voice was relentlessly impressive through “Feel So Fine”, “I” and “Make Me Love You”. She took a break to greet the audience and then got everyone up and dancing with “Fire”, “I Got Love” and “I’m OK”.
Next came “Sweet Love”, “Gemini”, “Lonely Night”, “I Blame You”, “When I Was Young” and “Rain”, the last trimmed with soulful jazz.
There was a stunning visual moment when white lights combined into her initials TY (for Tae-yeon) flanked by virtual butterflies against a sea of pink lights. Further dancing ensued through “Cover Up”, “Hands on Me” and “Stress” and a mash-up of “11:11” and “Why”.
Two and a half hours in, Taeyeon was still wailing out the tunes, still supremely in charge, in an encore that included “Fine”, “Time Lapse” and “Curtain Call”.
