Open until October 15, the contest aims to promote marine resources and environmental conservation by focusing on His Thai Majesty’s ships Prab and Sattakut. Both are teeming with marine life, making them popular dive destinations.
PTT Exploration and Production, the Royal Thai Navy, Kasetsart University’s Department of Fisheries and local businesses and communities are sponsoring the underwater-photography competition.
HTMS Prab was sunk near Koh Ngam Noi in Chumphon at the same time as HTMS Sattakut off Koh Tao in Surat Thani. Both were originally US Navy landing craft used in operations against Japanese forces in World War II.
Sattakut saw action in the liberation of the Pilau Islands and the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. The Thai Navy bought it in 1946 and used it as a patrol boat until its decommissioning in 2011. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources purchased it and sank it off Koh Tao as an artificial reef that would boost local tourism.
Sattakut sits upright in 30 metres of water, just 10 metres to the south of a popular dive site called Hin Pee Wee.
The contest requires that the images represent the vessels as “underwater learning sites” and reflect their benefit to biodiversity. Photos taken between November 1, 2011, and October 15 this yeara re eligible. The deadline for submission is also October 15. Downloaded an application form from www.Facebook.com/pttepphotocontest.
