Ratchanok rebounds to win opener in India Open

Defending champion Ratchanok Intanon shrugged off some sluggish play in the second game to beat Chinese Gao Fangje 21-15 21-19 to advance into the second round of the Yonex Sunrise India Open at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Two weeks after finishing runner-up in the All England Open, Ratchanok showed some rusts in her game but managed to pull herself together when it mattered to win the match in 37 minutes.

The world No 7, seeded fifth in the tournament, will next take on another Chinese Zhang Yiman who moved past Reshma Karthik of India 21-9 21-8.

In women’s doubles, fifth seed Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai, who won the Malaysian Masters together in February, ousted Mahima Aggarwal and Maneesha K of India 21-9 21-8.

The other winning Thai pair were eighth seeded Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai as they eliminated YUta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino of Japan 21-15 21-14 in the mixed doubles.

In the men's singles first round, Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk lost to Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan 18-21 8-21.
