Friends, Romans, fellow bloviators…

I was pleasantly surprised to see the expanded new Letters column on March 13.

The new name, “Public Forum”, suggested an august venue for dignified discussion like the ancient Roman forum. I pictured distinguished frequent contributors Senators Burinus Kantabutra, Vintus Chavala, and JC (standing for “Julius Caesar”) Wilcoxus, splendidly clad in their togas, listening to Tribune Ericus Bahrtus declaiming in favour of animal rights.
But the next day the name of the column changed to “Have Your Say”, which is considerably more folksy, but which eliminates the likelihood of togas. Clearly the editors were looking for a catchy name.
As a public service, I offer the following possibilities, even though they all have shortcomings. The first name that sprang to mind, “Bloviations”, might be considered insulting to contributors.  So might  “Ventings” and “Rants from Readers”. This column needs a name more dignified and uplifting. “Epistles”, then. With a bow to a popular buzzword (two buzzwords, actually), maybe “Local Wisdom”.  But no, this is Thailand, and we need something less serious:  something  light-hearted, but not flippant.
My old brain now being exhausted from its unaccustomed exercise, I suggest that the editors run a contest for a new name.  Make it sing.
