Asean leading the battle against forces of anti-globalisation

Re: “Asean faces major challenges as it turns 50”, Opinion, February 27.

Kavi Chongkittavorn’s latest column is highly valuable in its assessment that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has the diplomatic duty and power to counter the backlash against globalisation sweeping some Western countries.
Diplomatic outreach is crucial if the 10-member Asean, representing 645 million people, is to forge the solidarity needed for successful integration under the prevailing and irreversible process of globalisation.
Asean has further recognised the need for global partnership by signing up for the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
“Partnering for Change, Engaging the World” is Asean’s official theme this year, when we can expect it to take a humanistic approach to the process of globalisation, in harmony with its declared priority of being both a model of regionalism and a dynamic global player.
