India is being unfairly tarnished

Re: "American tourist, 46, raped in Northern India", World, September 19.

The Nation appears to take pride in highlighting negative news about India. The media in general are targeting the country unfairly in their reporting of the rape.
In fact, Wikipedia cites a 2011 study in which India is characterised as among “countries with the lowest per capita rates of rape” – lower than the US, UK, Sweden and Thailand, to name just a few.
Thirty-one tourists from Britain alone were raped in Spain last year, and that’s the figure for just one nationality and for a single year.
Of course, each single rape is reprehensible, but to pick on India as a hotspot for sexual assaults is plain wrong.
I urge you to print quality news that is of value to your readers. I also ask that you present an accurate picture of India, a nation with a rich culture and history that is also the birthplace of the Lord Buddha.
