BlackBerry Bold 9900 is a new sleek smart phone that features the new and improved BlackBerry 7 operating system, a hybrid interface QWERTY keyboard and a vivid touch screen.
At just 10.5mm thick, it’s also much skinnier that earlier BB models and looks very sleek with its brushed stainless steel frame and high-gloss glass-weave back plate.
Its 2.8-inch screen with 640 x 480 pixel resolution is bright and good for reading text and viewing photos. It also responds very well to the touch navigation, making scrolling through menus and applications a dream, though you can still use the conventional button above the keyboard if you prefer.
Bold 9900 has good performance thanks to its fast 1.2 GHz processor, its 768 megabytes of RAM and its improved BlackBerry 7 OS.
The test found that the touch screen and scrolling was responsive and fast. YouTube clips played smoothly and photos were beautifully displaced. Two games provided with the handset also played smoothly and fast.
And the QWERTY keyboard worked well, allowing me to easily type my Facebook and Twitter messages.
The phone’s music player feature impressed me. I tested it with Sony EX-1000 headphones and found that the music was rendered clearly and with a very powerful bass thanks to bass boosting and audio boosting options.
Research In Motion (RIM) says it uses Liquid Graphics technology to deliver the highly responsive touch-based navigation, web browsing, pictures viewing and video playback.
Bold 9900 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, which took good quality photos for a mobile phone. It can also record and play back 720p HD video.
Among other things, the new OS comes with new Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones (2.0) app.
Its news features include Facebook chat and BBM integration that makes it easier for users to connect with their Facebook friends in real time. The new OS uses BlackBerry pushing message technology to deliver new updates and chat messages of your Facebook directly to your phone and alert you when new Facebook messages or updates arrive.
The new OS also comes with updated Social Feeds (2.0) app, which has been extended to capture updates from media, podcasts, and favourites all in one consolidated view.
Its improved BlackBerry browser also works faster in rendering web pages and web graphics.
BlackBerry 7 OS also includes a number of other pre-loaded applications, including Premium version of Documents To Go for working with Microsoft Office documents. There is also BlackBerry Protect for users to back up personal data.
BlackBerry Bold 9900 retails for Bt19,900.
