The Suchada gold shop was almost wiped out as the robbers, who were heavily armed, swept up Bt85 million worth of gold ornaments.
Police suspect that the robbers were Muslim insurgents operating in the three southern border provinces and four districts of Songkhla. The gang stole a van and used it to transport them to the gold shop as well as their getaway vehicle.
Police said one of the robbers was dressed as a woman and asked to be allowed into the shop to buy gold ornaments. Once the shop’s staff pressed a button to unlock the front door, the first robber blocked it from closing while his 11 accomplices rushed inside.
Samak Anuchorn, the owner of the shop, insisted that he would not close down and explained that he needed three or four days to restock. He added that he would also need to wait for police to collect all evidence and interview witnesses.
The shop is located in downtown Tambon Na Thawee of Na Thawee district. Other gold shops nearby continued to trade but have stepped up security measures.
