World Blood Donor Day commemorates Karl Landsteiner, the Austrian scientist and physician who identified and developed the ABO blood group system.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) annually invite Red Cross Societies in all countries to organise activities to express gratitude to blood donors so as to raise public awareness of the importance and necessity of voluntary blood donation.
The Thai Red Cross Society will organise an activity to mark this occasion on Saturday (June 15) at the National Blood Centre on the theme “Safe Blood for All”. Besides the chance to donate blood and receive a T-shirt, people can take part in fun games to win prizes and enjoy mini-concerts by celebrities and singers, Similar events would be held at Regional Blood Centres nationwide.
