Prisoners register for health-care scheme
A total of 261,672 inmates, or 91 per cent of the country's 286,671 prisoners, have registered with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) for the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS), said NHSO chief Sakchai Kanjanawatana.
Meanwhile, 140 prison infirmaries have passed the UCS standard assessment for primary service clinics and two prison infirmaries passed as their regular health care service centres, he added.

Sakchai was speaking after the Public Health Ministry, the Justice Ministry's Corrections Department and the NHSO signed a memorandum of understanding to continue to boost the capacity and potential of prison infirmaries in taking care of inmates and to allow better access to UCS services.
The measure is reportedly in accordance with a Cabinet resolution in November 2015.
The NHSO was assigned to proceed under the National Health Security Act 2002, including registering prison infirmaries as primary care and regular health care service clinics, registering inmates for access to UCS services and arranging budgets to take care of prisoners.
A committee for public health development for inmates would be established along with local-level panels, he added.
