The body of Auan Saikham, 53, was found at 5am hanging almost in a sitting position from a low tree branch behind her house in Ban Sai village in Tambon Viang in Phayao's Chiang Kham district at 5am.
Her daughter, Nalinporn Saikham, 27, told police that she had searched for and found the body after a regular patron of Auan had called to ask why she had not turned up to sell her steamed sticky rice.
Nalinporn said her mother had already cooked the sticky rice and loaded everything onto her pushcart ready to leave to sell it at the market.
A doctor checked and no trace of Auan being harmed apart from the trace of nylon rope around her neck.
Nalinporn said her mother had become depressed after her father became bedridden five months ago. She had diabetes and was also in heavy debt to a loan shark.
