Boat salvage operations restarted on Wednesday morning after the specialised crane arrived, and are expected to be completed in five days, according to newly appointed Immigration Bureau Maj-General Surachate Hakparn.
The work is being done under contract by a new private-sector company, says Phuket Marine Office Chief Wiwat Chitcherdwong said. The last attempt to raise the boat tried flotation tanks and air bags.
“The crane could not be used in the previous salvage operation because of strong winds and waves,” said Wiwat. “Now Phuket is in the high season and the wind and waves are not as strong. So the operation is not struggling with the same conditions as the previous operation.”
