Director Nipon Chamnongsiri said the fear of tourists being trapped by rising water following heavy rains led his office to close all caves in the region.
The apparent entrapment of a football team by rising rainwater at a Chiang Rai cave was on their minds when officials made the decision, he said.
Nipon said tourists would be allowed only to visit the front of the caves and would be prevented from going inside.
The province is home to Tham Lod, one of the nation’s most popular caves, located in the Tham Pha Tham Pol Wildlife Sanctuary in None Maprang district.
