At the scene, police found a large crowd crowded around a drain with a strong smell coming from it.
After opening the drain, police found a decayed male body without his head. The corpse was wearing a T-shirt and long jeans and on there were left arm were green and red wristbands and a tattoo.
No identification documents were found and police sent the body to Thalang Hospital for an autopsy.
Mongkol Kongsaeng, a 35-year-old Chiang Rai native who found the body, said that he had been buying food nearby and realised that his car key was missing. He thought that the key might have dropped into the drain and used his mobile phone flashlight to look inside and was shocked to see a dead body.
Police have not located the head of the deceased man and are treating the incident as a homicide, with the priority to establish his identification.
