The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has conducted the project referred to as “returning animals to the wild for a fertile forest”, which so far had seen nearly 25,000 animals belonging to 48 species released into forests.
Hog deer are protected by the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act 1960. The Wildlife Conservation Office has successfully bred them in cages and released them in wildlife sanctuaries since 1983.
So far, 629 hog deer have been released in wildlife sanctuaries.
