Accused in killing disabled man taken to court

Police escorted a group of young men, including the sons of three police officers, to court yesterday for the first detention period.

The killing of a disabled bread-delivery man in Bangkok’s Soi Chokchai 4 on Sunday was captured on video and went viral on Thai social media.
Another suspect, who is also a policeman’s son, was injured during the assault and is being treated in hospital under police custody.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Ananchai Chaidech, said the victim’s relatives would file a police complaint against a Thai woman who was shouting encouragement to the murderers. The complaint would be filed after the funeral rites of Somkiat Srichan, 36, in Nakhon Pathom province have been completed. The six men aged between 18 and 22 were charged with murder and carrying weapons in the form of two swords to a public place without permission. Police are against their bail release because of the risk of evidence tampering. It was reported that the young men had been drinking overnight and in the next day mocked and angered the victim resulting in the argument and the fatal attack.
Pol Lt-Colonel Pratuan Malaengtab of Chokchai Precinct said police were interviewing witnesses and checking out surveillance footage. The youth were later sent for detention to the Bangkok Remand Prison.
