BMA to sue car park operator to secure the release of 70 confiscated fire engines

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will file a civil lawsuit against the operator of a Laem Chabang Port car park for refusing to release 70 fire engines over a row about rent.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Assawin Kwanmuang said the city deemed the Bt809 million rent being charged by Namyong Terminal Co for the parking space as too expensive.
So, it assigned its Legal and Litigation Office to gather evidence to sue Namyong in a bid to free the vehicles, which had been part of a Bt6.68 billion controversial procurement project. If Namyong insists on getting that rent, the city would ask the court to settle the matter, he added.
The city is keen to repair the vehicles before they can be used. Pol Col Pichai Kriengwattanasiri, chief of the Fire and Rescue Department, yesterday said a committee had checked condition of the fire engines and concluded the cost of repairs would be Bt200 million. They will ask for a budget from the city administrators to cover the cost.
