Foreign language training for Thai tourist guides

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports are working with the Bureau of the Royal Household to organise foreign-language training for tour guides to assist the high volume of international tourists visiting the Grand Palace and the Temple of Emerald Buddha.

The Royal Household has created newly designated walking routes around the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha so tourists can proceed in an orderly |fashion.
“A project has been developed to develop more tourist guides for the purpose and so far two classes in Chinese-language guides have graduated. Training of tourists in other languages will follow suit,” according to Wanasiri Morakul, DOT director |general.
The ministry has instructed the DOT to organise training for 500 more foreign-language tourist guides to work in the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The training of tourist guides is divided into five classes, comprising 100 guides in each class.
The Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha are two of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in Thailand.
These two prestigious attractions are well known for their significant artistic beauty and historical and cultural importance, as well as being symbols of the everlasting bond between Thai people and the Royal Family.
The newly designated tourist routes have proven to bring more orderliness to the management of the high volume of visiting tourists.
Wanasiri said that the practice is set into two separate walking routes with each route taking 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Wireless audio kits are made available to all tourists.
The third class of foreign-language tourist guide training will be conducted in English during January 23-25, 2017. After training, the proficiency test will be held on January 27, 2017 to certify their capability to work inside the palace compound.
According to the project, tourist guides are taught the accurate knowledge about the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. They have to have knowledge about the artistic components, architecture, and the paintings shown in the compound.
They will also learn about procedures in guest admission and ticketing, the use of wireless audio kit, visiting rules and regulations, the taking of still and video photography, the appropriate attire for visitors and how to successfully impress tourists by rendering good services.
