FamilyMarts to exceed 2,000 within 5 years

CENTRAL FAMILYMART plans to double the number of its FamilyMart convenience stores in Thailand from 1,116 now to more than 2,000 within five years.

Company president Chiranun Poopat said it would continuously expand the number of FamilyMarts in the Kingdom to cater to a growing market and increase its access to target consumers in specific locations.
The new stores will be established by the company’s own capital investment as well as franchising.
“We are still confident in the high growth potential of convenience stores in the Thai market as shoppers [appreciate] their convenience and diversity as well as product quality.
“We will focus on opening new FamilyMart stores in Bangkok and surrounding areas as well as [other] major cities and destinations that are preferred by foreign tourists,” she said.
Chiranun said the company would open more than 60 new stores this year, and over the next five years, it expects the total number of FamilyMarts to reach 2,000 throughout the Kingdom, up from 1,116 today.
“In addition to opening new stores, we will focus on improvement of existing FamilyMart outlets to make them more modern and cater to new consumer lifestyles and changing demand,” she said.
Chiranun said the company would also focus on strong collaboration with local entrepreneurs and suppliers to offer products that are appropriate for specific areas, especially tourist destinations.

Latest branch
The latest FamilyMart was opened last Friday in the MBK shopping centre in Bangkok to offer ready-to-eat foods and beverages to both Thai and foreign shoppers.
For the Vegetarian Festival this year, Chiranun said, FamilyMart has increased the number of vegetarian assortments it offers to 400 items, especially ready-to-eat food, and expects sales growth of more than 200 per cent over last year.
She said FamilyMart would focus on quality, taste and variety, responding to the emerging trend of health-conscious customers who need both nutrition and convenience.
“With our current ‘10 Days with Vegetarian Meals at FamilyMart’ campaign, we have developed a healthy menu with our suppliers to ensure good-quality raw materials and good taste,” she said.
The new offerings include vegetarian onigiri (Japanese rice balls), vegetarian baked Riceberry with taro, vegetarian stir-fried mixed mushroom with rice, stir-fried soy protein with black pepper, and a coleslaw sandwich and vegetarian bento set.
To serve customers who cook at home, a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and vegetarian seasonings are available at FamilyMart stores 24 hours a day during the October 1-9 Vegetarian Festival, Chiranun said.
During the festival, the company expects higher numbers of Chinese customers in Phuket, Samui, Koh Pha Kgan Pha-ngan and Pattaya. For their convenience, it has added Chinese to its recommended vegetarian menu.
Kasikorn Research Centre forecasts that spending at this year’s Vegetarian Festival will rise by 7.2 per cent to Bt44 billion, of which Bt4.5 billion will be in Bangkok.
Per-person spending will be about Bt300 per day.
