The red kangaroo that escaped from Chiang Mai Zoo has died, with drowning the likely cause of death

Officials have discovered the carcass of a 2-year-old female red kangaroo, which escaped from Chiang Mai Zoo on May 29, in the Huai Chang Kian area of Doi Suthep forest.

The carcass has been removed and taken to a veterinarian for a thorough autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The site where the carcass was found is covered with trees and grass and relatively steep with a waterfall flowing down to a pool.  It is believed the marsupial fell from the cascade into the water below and was unable to climb out.

Experts revealed that the autopsy will take about one week for an examination of the internal organs, but a cellular-level exam could take approximately one month.

Tracking efforts began immediately after the kangaroo’s escape on Wednesday morning with Doi Suthep-Pui National Park staff and some 50 Chiang Mai Zoo employees entering the park to search, but the kangaroo was not found. On Thursday (May 30), over 70 officials were deployed to search the area, eventually discovering the animal’s body.
