Mae Fah Luang Foundation’s triumph of rural development shines on supermarket shelves across the country
DoiTung is a royal project known to Thais for well over 50 years – mainly for its delicious coffee. It is run by the Mae Fah Luang (“Royal Mother from the Sky”) Foundation in Doi Tung, Chiang Rai province.
The non‐profit foundation was established to improve the quality of life of locals who were stuck in poverty and deprived of opportunities. It encouraged locals to give up opium cultivation and switch to growing coffee and other crops. It now manages numerous projects in Thailand as well as other countries in Asia. The foundation mission focuses on three areas: improving social and economic development, preserving the environment, and supporting local arts and culture.
