The huge influx of tourists early on Sunday led to severe traffic congestion on the road to the mountaintop in Jom Thong district.
Doi Inthanon National Park has yet to report tourist figures for Sunday but on Saturday, a total of 18,754 visitors were recorded. The park officials said the number included 1,456 foreign tourists.
The tourists were treated early on Sunday to a white carpet of hoarfrost on grass fields at the car park.
Unlike regular frost, where water vapour first condenses as liquid water on the object and then freezes, hoarfrost forms directly from water vapour into ice crystals without going through the liquid phase.
Kriangkrai Chaipiset, chief of the Doi Inthanon National Park, said the lowest temperature on Sunday morning was measured at the front of the Kew Mae Pan nature trail.
A lot of tourists went to the Kew Mae Pan viewpoint to wait for sunrise. Most of them donned hats, gloves and scarves because of the chill.
Kriangkrai said park officials were deployed to watch over tourists on Doi Inthanon around the clock on New Year’s Eve. The park has installed 15 security cameras for surveillance.
