Cabinet reshuffle not happening on April 17, Srettha clarifies

SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 2024

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Saturday ruled out a Cabinet reshuffle on April 17, in reaction to widespread speculation.

He said April 17 was not the definite date and emphasised that the names and Cabinet positions in news reports were just speculation. “There are no changes today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow,” he said.

He said excessive news reporting on the matter would also make those who appear on the list uncomfortable.

He acknowledged receiving phone calls from individuals mentioned in the rumours but assured them that they should not be concerned as no official decision has been made.

Srettha said that there were various reasons for a Cabinet reshuffle, including responsibilities, Parliament and governance, as well as ensuring that the right people are in the right positions. With the government having been in office for 6-7 months, it's necessary to consider suitability and focus on addressing public concerns as a priority.

The PM denied rumours about him taking over the position of Defence Minister. He clarified that there was no clear decision on this matter yet, and as of today, he remains the Minister of Finance. Additionally, he just gave instructions to the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance and Deputy Minister of Finance Chulaphan Amornwivat.

Srettha also took time off on Saturday to celebrate the Songkran Festival with his family and his 96-year-old mother in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

He wished everyone a joyful Songkran celebration and urged travellers to have a safe journey back to their hometowns. He encouraged spending time with family, visiting relatives, and emphasised social responsibility, advising against drinking and driving.
