Safety during Songkran: Police offer 8 tips

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2024

In a bid to reduce road accidents and fatalities, the Royal Thai Police has released a list of eight precautions people can take during the notorious “7 dangerous days” of Songkran.

They are:

• Travel conditions: Before embarking on any journey, travellers are advised to ensure they are well-rested and familiar with their routes. It is crucial to check vehicle conditions, including brakes, tyres and lights, to guarantee safety.

• Motorcycle safety: Both the driver and passenger must always wear a helmet. Slow down when approaching wet areas, drive at a steady speed and avoid abrupt braking as it will cause the bike to skid. Also, keep a firm hold on the bike’s handlebars.

Safety during Songkran: Police offer 8 tips

• No drinking and driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol can cause accidents, resulting in deaths. People caught driving under the influence can face three to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of 60,000 to 200,000 baht. Their driving licence will also be revoked.

• Social media caution: Posting images of alcoholic beverages with enticing messages, promoting or encouraging drinking can be considered an offence and lead to legal consequences. Penalties include up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to 500,000 baht.

• Explicit content: Sharing explicit or lewd content can be considered a criminal offence under computer-related laws. Violators stand to face up to five years in prison and/or 100,000 baht in fines.

• Harassment or sexual assault: People are advised to protect themselves and be vigilant in crowded areas, and to dress appropriately.

• Home security: People leaving their homes unattended are reminded to take precautions against theft by installing CCTV cameras or signing up for the “leave your home with the police” programme.

• Water safety: Water-related accidents, especially involving youngsters, are a significant concern. Activities like getting into water fights on trucks, jumping into canals or spraying water on motorcycles can cause serious accidents and even loss of life. Vigilance is encouraged.
