Phumtham, who is also deputy prime minister, said on Tuesday that he has received a report from Patcharamon Trakultivakorn, minister counsellor at the Thai embassy in Madrid, that the new rule will apply to 3-litre plastic bottles.
As per the new regulation, caps of plastic bottles are to remain attached to the bottles after being unscrewed, Phumtham said.
He added that this new regulation was announced under the provision of an EU directive issued on June 5, 2019. The directive, known as the “Single-Use Plastics Directive”, focuses on reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.
The directive also requires that from January 1, 2025, all PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles must have at least 25% recyclable content and from January 1, 2030, the ratio of recyclable content must be raised to 30%.
