Thai filmmakers have until May 15 to seek subsidy for ‘soft power’ film

TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2024

The Culture Ministry has extended its offer of a 30-million-baht subsidy for films on Thai soft power by another 15 days to May 15.

The scheme was set to run out on April 30, and the ministry did not elaborate on why it was being extended.

In early March, the ministry announced that it would give 30 million baht to filmmakers who have released at least two films promoting Thai soft power.

When the film “The Undertaker” became a hit earlier this year, Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who also chairs the national soft power strategy committee, met the director and declared that his film was a successful example of Thai soft power.

Thiti Srinuan, who made “Sapparer” (“The Undertaker”), said he did not know what soft power meant, but insisted the government had not supported his film at all.

Meanwhile, to win the 30-million-baht subsidy, the filmmaker needs to ensure their film meets international standards, can be screened in foreign film festivals, has English subtitles and has a name in both Thai and English.

The project should also state the timeframe for the shooting, expected expenses and promotion plans. The filmmaker is also required to provide several details including the concept of the film, the director’s statement, synopsis, treatment, dialogue and characterisation, etc.
