Most believe only a few volunteer lawyers perform duties genuinely

The majority of Thai people believe that only a few volunteer lawyers perform duties without personal benefits or reputational gain, according to a survey by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA Poll).

The survey was conducted among 1,310 respondents at least 18 years old, from around the country from October 28-30, and it was published on Sunday.

Here are the results of the “Do genuine volunteer lawyers exist?” survey.

Regarding the existence of genuine volunteer lawyers:

  • 52.44%: Exist, but in small numbers
  • 26.56%: Not confident they exist
  • 16.88%: Do not exist 
  • 4.12%: Exist and there are a lot of them

Regarding levels of trust when seeking service or advice from lawyers:  

  • 42.06%: Moderately confident
  • 36.11%: Moderately not confident
  • 12.52%: Definitely not confident
  • 8.78%: Definitely confident
  • 0.53%: No comment

Regarding persons or organisations that respondents trust if they doubt justice in a lawsuit:

  • 42.06%: Damrongdhama Centre, Interior Ministry
  • 21.83%: Relevant associations, foundations or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) 
  • 19.16%: Office of Civil Rights Protection and Legal Aid
  • 13.44%: No one
  • 11.68%: Volunteer lawyers from the Lawyers Council
  • 11.37%: Government House’s hotline 1111
  • 9.01%: General lawyers 
  • 8.17%: Volunteer lawyers from the Thai Bar under Royal Patronage
  • 6.87%: Famous lawyers
  • 1.60%: Politicians
  • 4.96%: Others, such as TV programmes and social media
