One death, 248 new cases as infections jump in Bangkok’s two hotspots
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Wednesday reported 248 new cases, six of whom are returnees, and one death. No details of the fatality were released by the CCSA as of press time.
Of the new cases, 79 were infected while visiting high-risk areas. Samut Sakhon leads this list with 26 cases, followed by 13 each in Nakhon Pathom and Bangkok, nine in Tak, five in Ratchaburi, three each in Samut Prakan and Suphanburi, two each in Phetchaburi and Songkhla, one each in Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Si Sa Ket.
CCSA spokesperson Apisamai Srirangsan said the centre was concerned about the Bang Khae cluster as merchants have been travelling between provinces for trade purposes, resulting in a new infection in Si Sa Ket province for the first time in a long while.
Meanwhile, proactive testing has led to the discovery of 163 cases. Of these, 154 were found in Bangkok alone (15 Thais, 16 Myanmar nationals, as well as 68 migrant workers in Bang Khen district and 55 who are under investigation in Bang Khae district). The rest included seven in Samut Sakhon, and one each in Phetchaburi and Nonthaburi.
The spokesperson said a large number of cases in Bang Khae district are from quarantine facilities for foreign workers, which are now under investigation.
Of the six returnees, three are Thais, one Briton, one Indian and an Indonesian national who travelled from Nigeria, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, 40 patients have recovered and been discharged.
As of Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 27,402. Of these, 24,460 had been contracted locally, including 15,310 who were found via proactive testing, while 2,942 were returnees. So far, 26,339 have recovered and been discharged, 975 patients are still being treated and the death toll has risen to 88.
According to Worldometer, as of 10am, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 121.28 million (up by 449,180), 97.82 million have recovered, 20.78 million are active cases (88,649 in severe condition) and 2.68 million have died (up by 9,847).
Thailand ranks 115th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 30.23 million, followed by Brazil 11.6 million, India 11.43 million, Russia 4.4 million and the United Kingdom 4.27 million.
