Considered the crown jewel of Thailand’s cinemas, the theatre started selling tickets for two movies (Blow-Up, Cinema Paradiso) and two Thai documentary films (The Scala, Phanthom of Illumination), the final screening on July 4-5.
The closure of Bangkok’s last standalone movie theatre was announced via Facebook recently by its operator, Apex. It comes just over 50 years since the art-deco masterpiece first opened its doors – on December 31, 1969 with the Thai premiere of “The Undefeated”, starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson.
The Scala is the last of four grand Apex cinemas. Sala Chalerm Thai Cinema was demolished in 1989, Siam Cinema was burned down during political rallies in 2010, and the Lido Cinema closed when its lease expired on May 31, 2018.
The Scala then began to adapt, adding as many as five shows a day to meet demand from moviegoers for a wide variety of film genres.
The cinema closed from March 18 to May 31 as part of the country's lockdown measures.
Facebook page ‘Apex Scala’ informed on Tuesday (June 23) that the theatre’s rental contract would expire this year, and added that it had been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis. The page said that "the theatre would turn on all its lights on July 3, for a final glimpse of its beauty for visitors".
