“Chick is touring in celebration of his 75th birthday and is delighted to be back with the original members of the Elektric Band after 12 years,” says Pheeraphon Pipawakorn, business director of Cadenza Performing Arts Organiser.
“The band was very popular in ‘80s and ‘90s and all members were – are – great. I’m so pleased they are coming to Thailand. I’m sure they’ll inspire our own Thai jazz musicians. I remember Koh Mr Saxman telling me that he was inspired by Eric Marienthal, a Grammy Award-winning contemporary saxophonist. In addition to the concert, we will also have a workshop in cooperation with Yamaha Music School,” he continues.
The jazz fusion band comes with its classic line-up of bass heavyweight John Patitucci, guitarist Frank Gambale, saxophonist Eric Marienthal and drummer Dave Weckl.
The Chick Corea Elektric Band was set up by the jazz pianist in the mid-1980s and in 1986 released its first self-titled album with a “jazz rock” sound. The funk-led “Light Years” and acoustic “Eye of the Beholder” followed that same decade and the ’90s kicked off with the post-pop “Inside Out” and the electric jazz-funk outing “Beneath the Mask” after which the members went their separate ways. After a long hiatus, the band reunited to produce “To the Stars” in 2004.
