AN AFFORDABLE two-in-one tablet/laptop computer, which works well for writing and browsing the Net, the Acer One 10 switches easily between modes.
It uses a latch-free magnetic hinge design that makes transitioning easy. You simply pull out the display from the keyboard to use it in the Pad or tablet mode and snap its back to the keyboard to turn it into a notebook computer.
You can also attach the display unit to the keyboard unit by having the display point outward and use it to show the screen to someone sitting opposite or reverse it to rest on the display and keyboard edges and use it in Tent mode. The changes can be done on the fly without having to turn off the computer first.
The keyboard unit has a built-in 500 gigabytes hard drive to enhance the storage of 32 GB built into the tablet unit.
Acer One 10 is powered by Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33 GHz quad-core processor. It is equipped with 2 gigabytes of RAM or working memory and it uses built-in Intel HD Graphics to drive display power.
The One 10 has a 10.1-inch IPS LCD with 1,280x800 pixel resolution. It uses Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n without a LAN or Ethernet port to connect to the Internet and also boasts a Bluetooth 4.0 connection.
The tablet unit has a microSD card reader, a micro HDMI port, a micro USB port and a stereo jack. The keyboard dock also provides a full-size USB port for connecting to a flash drive, for example. Smart with a brushed metal exterior in silver, the computer has a large Lithium Polymer battery of 8,400 mAh capacity.
The test unit runs on Windows 8.1 with an option to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge and comes with a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal, meaning students can use Microsoft Words, Excel, and PowerPoint to do their homework at no extra cost.
During the test, I found that Acer One 10 had good performance for word processing, Web page browsing, video clip playing and displaying of photos. The computer started up and shut down in a snap and the keyboard and touch screen were very responsive.
Acer One 10 has an initial suggested retail price of Bt9,990.
